May24 | Exhibit Opening: A Taste for the Exotic: Mementos from Around the GlobeMV Museum Galleries, 59 School Street, Edgartown Maritime industries of the 19th and early 20th centuries took Vineyarders to distant reaches of the planet. Chasing whales and shipping goods, they traveled the world’s oceans from Africa to the South Pacific and the frigid Arctic, stopping at nearly every island along the way. Often sailors and whalers would bring home souvenirs of these far-flung ports they visited for their friends and family. In this exhibit, we explore the different geographic regions visited by Vineyard mariners in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The objects they brought home as souvenirs serve as documents of encounter, but also documents of cultures irrevocably changed by these maritime industries. Join us for an opening reception, and help unveil this exhibit. Refreshments will be served. 5-7 pm. Free to members, $7 for non-members. 508-627-4441 x12 |
