Chatham Sharks in the Park

Kate Gould Park, Main Street, Chatham

The Sharks in the Park project combines public art with the business community to create a unique Chatham experience. The Chatham Chamber of Commerce’s Merchants Association is sponsoring this program with the goal of creating a public art event that will generate excitement and build community spirit while utilizing the area’s incredible artistic talent.

This new art installation has been appropriately named “Sharks in the Park” and will be installed in Kate Gould Park beginning May 18 and will be there until June 2.  The sharks will then be moved to various locations in Chatham throughout the summer with the media being notified whenever we have Sharks in the Park sightings.

A live and online auction sponsored by the Chatham Chamber's Merchants Association will be held at the Shark Gala to be held at Chatham Bars Inn on August 1 for people to bid on purchasing each shark sculpture.  Proceeds from the auction will go to the development of the Chatham Shark and Marine Life Research Center Foundation.

Exhibit Opening: A Taste for the Exotic: Mementos from Around the Globe

MV Museum Galleries, 59 School Street, Edgartown

Maritime industries of the 19th and early 20th centuries took Vineyarders to distant reaches of the planet. Chasing whales and shipping goods, they traveled the world’s oceans from Africa to the South Pacific and the frigid Arctic, stopping at nearly every island along the way. Often sailors and whalers would bring home souvenirs of these far-flung ports they visited for their friends and family. In this exhibit, we explore the different geographic regions visited by Vineyard mariners in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The objects they brought home as souvenirs serve as documents of encounter, but also documents of cultures irrevocably changed by these maritime industries. Join us for an opening reception, and help unveil this exhibit. Refreshments will be served. 5-7 pm. Free to members, $7 for non-members.
